Why We Support MSHDA’s Key to Own Program

Homeownership starts with understanding what is possible. That is why we support MSHDA’s Key to Own program—and why I welcome buyers using it at 1063 Lori Street in Ypsilanti Township.

What is Key to Own?

Key to Own is a homeownership option for eligible participants in MSHDA’s Housing Choice Voucher program. It allows rental voucher assistance to transfer to an approved home purchase. Buyers still need mortgage approval; this is not a rent-to-own agreement with the seller.

MSHDA’s published criteria include being a current voucher participant in good standing, meeting first-time-buyer requirements, and satisfying income and employment rules, with exceptions for elderly or disabled participants. The process includes education, financial preparation, a participating lender, and an approved property.

Requirements and individual circumstances matter. Our agents can help you understand the process and the questions to ask; MSHDA and the lender make the eligibility and financing decisions.

Why we support it

We believe buyers deserve to know about the paths available to them. For someone already receiving rental assistance, ownership may feel out of reach simply because they have never been shown how a program like this works.

We also value preparation. Buying a home means taking on maintenance, repairs, and a budget that needs to work beyond closing day. Key to Own’s education and counseling help make those responsibilities part of the conversation.

And we believe in the opportunity to put down roots. A home can offer stability and the possibility of building equity over time. Ownership will not be the right next step for everyone, but eligible buyers deserve the chance to explore it with clear information and support.

Putting that support into practice at 1063 Lori

My listing at 1063 Lori Street, Ypsilanti Township, MI 48198 offers three bedrooms, one full bath, and 1,040 square feet above grade, plus an unfinished basement and detached garage.
